2025 Texas Propositions Election

Are You the Warrior or the Caregiver in Your Story?

Contributed by Laura Logan

Something clicked in my head the other day. An ah-ha moment, if you will. Maybe you all already figured this out, but here’s my eureka moment. As I have been making my five calls and sending post cards and attending rallies and reading constantly to stay informed (like we do these days) I have in my mind been thinking of myself as a warrior, a soldier fighting the forces of evil. But I am not a warrior. I’m a caregiver. I’m an exhausted caregiver watching our fragile democracy struggle to survive and doing all I can to help and heal, just as I have done for loved ones in the past. In truth, warriors and caregivers do have quite a lot in common, so it’s a subtle shift in my thinking, but one that matters for me.

Most importantly, thinking of myself as a warrior fed my anger toward perceived enemies and caused me to see enemy combatants everywhere I looked. Seeing myself as a caregiver puts the focus on what I love. It also seems to allow me to better appreciate the small wins (He sang again today. The court issued an injunction.) And, it gives me permission to both grieve when I need to and care for myself throughout the process rather than shaming myself for not being tough enough or doing more.

Now that I have shifted from warrior to caregiver mode I find I am able to give myself space and grace. As a former social worker I have given “the caregiver pep talk” countless times. But I haven’t been following my own advice. I bet you all know the talk: get some sleep and some exercise; you don’t have to do this alone, so ask for and accept help; find a support group you enjoy; celebrate the small stuff; find a reason to laugh every day; protect your peace; breathe. Believe me, this is a quite different message than the one my warrior self was listening to.

I don’t know if any of this makes a bit of sense to any of you, but if it does I encourage you to consider whether shifting your internal perspective could benefit you as well. This is still a work in progress for me, but so far it’s been positive and pretty powerful.

They say “a picture is worth a thousand words,” so take a look at this powerful visual showing just how many locations are already on board for this rally. It’s a bold, united message from across the country, declaring loud and clear.

ACLU Guidelines: Know Your Rights for Protestors

  • Where Your Rights Apply:

    • Strongest in public forums which are streets, sidewalks, parks.

    • Counter protesters have equal free speech rights.

    • Police must remain neutral and can separate groups but must keep them within sight and/or sound of each other.

    • Private property owners can restrict speech.

  • If Your Rights Are Violated:

    • Write down everything you remember (badge numbers, patrol cars, agencies).

    • Get witness contact info.

    • Take photos of injuries.

    • File a complaint with internal affairs or a civilian review board.

  • Dispersal Orders:

    • Can only be issued in cases of clear, immediate threats to safety (riot, traffic disruption, etc.)

    • Dealing with Orders to Disperse, Comply Calmly: Law enforcement must provide a clear dispersal order, time to leave, and a safe exit route before arrests. Always follow dispersal instructions calmly to avoid escalation

PROJECT WHAT?

Trump spent much of last year publicly distancing himself from Project 2025 but now he appears to be fully on board. Not only has he embraced the sweeping 900 page Project 2025 blueprint, but he’s also surrounded himself with its key architects, many of whom now hold some of the most powerful positions in his administration. From Day One, January 20th, they hit the ground running, swiftly dismantling key parts of the federal government, all under the guise of battling their favorite boogeyman: waste, fraud, and abuse. For many of us the fast pace of policy shifts has felt extreme. Concern over eroding checks and balances in our governmental institutions feels threatening. Especially for LGTQ+, women, and immigrants we see rights rollbacks. Overall, this feeling that democracy and hard won freedoms are at risk is alarming. They want us to tire, to acquiesce, we can not afford that luxury, folks. There is so much to lose if we stop paying attention.

These “trackers” can provide guidance for just that. We can stay informed and follow the unfolding reality of Trump’s Project 2025 right here:

You are welcome!
