AUGUST IS GUN SAFETY MONTH - Listen to what these kids have to say!
Rather than “Agree to Disagree”, they propose we should be saying “Agree to Agree” in order to move forward together and save lives. Shared from the Ad Council website Agree to Agree
KITZMAN AND KOLKHORST: FAYETTE COUNTY REPRESENTATIVES’ SHAMEFUL RECORD ON GUNS - Contributed by Karen Derr
Since this 89th Legislature established August as Gun Safety Month, let's look at the officials who Fayette County sent to Austin and how they stack up on the topic. According to CNN, guns are now the number one cause of death in children and teens in the U.S. You may see this statistic disputed, but don't be fooled; the number of gun related deaths of our children are undeniably running neck and neck with automobile and other accidents. Any discrepancy is slight and due to whether 19 year olds are considered teens and whether infants under one year old are included.
While our senator Kolkhorst voted yes to establish August as Gun Safety Month, her rating by the watchdog group Texas Gun Sense (TGS) is a miserable 17% for her voting record this session. Our state representative Kitzman is even worse at 8%, with the low points being his disgusting support of a bill that would allow concealed firearms at polling locations. Thank goodness that bill died.
However, with both Kitzman and Kolkhorst's support, SB 1362 has been signed into law by Governor Abbott. This bill, known as the "Anti-Red Flag Act," prohibits state and local entities from enforcing "extreme risk protective orders" (ERPOs). ERPOs are court orders designed to temporarily remove firearms from individuals deemed to pose a potential risk. Additionally, the bill bars state and local entities from accepting federal grant funds related to implementing ERPOs and declares any federal statutes or regulations regarding such orders unenforceable if they are perceived to infringe on constitutional rights like due process, the right to bear arms, or free speech.
The bill specifically defines an ERPO as a written order aimed at reducing firearm-related death or injury risks by prohibiting firearm possession or requiring firearm surrender. Kolkhorst and Kitzman are on the record against reducing firearm-related deaths! I hope Fayette County voters will remember this betrayal of our safety and the lives of our children. And get this, Kolkhorst and Kitzman are on the record saying they are against reducing firearm-related deaths! I hope Fayette County voters won't forget next election.

“Mending Walls”
Contributed by Patty Reid
The poem “Mending Walls” by Robert Frost was written in 1914.
The first line states: “Something there is that doesn’t love a wall.” Either man or nature is always tearing down the wall. In the poem, two men are discussing the wall. The one building the wall says “ Good fences make good neighbors.” This reminds me of what is happening with our political differences today. We put up walls and are afraid to cross them. A wall suggests mistrust and exclusion, yet some feel it makes “good neighbors.” In the poem, the two men discuss their different feelings about walls without animosity. It suggests that there is a feeling of understanding of their differences as they both work together to mend the wall. It is inevitable that we will have conflicts throughout life, personally and nationally. Can we find commonality?
I hope it is not too late!
