April 11th, 18th, 25th (Saturdays), 9 am - 10 am: No Kings may be over but our work is not complete!  Come join us on the SW corner of the town square in La Grange, around the intersection of Main St and W Travis St. Parking is available around the square and surrounding streets. Your Party At Work

A Meeting With The Sheriff

On March 12th members of the Fayette County Democratic Party met with Fayette County Sheriff Keith Korenek to discuss concerns regarding the contract the county has signed to assist ICE and the impact ICE’s presence might have on our community. Representatives for the FCDP included Judy Balch, Becky Snyder, Lane Gosnay, and Laura Logan. The group asked questions prepared in advance in conjunction with other concerned FCDP members. The meeting was friendly and went well. Below are highlights of Sheriff Korenek’s responses and what we learned: 

1. Korenek stated the county agreed to enter into the agreement for budgetary reasons stating they will be paid for doing things they already do. He said the amount of money being offered by the federal government was too significant to ignore, and accepting it is good business but will not change how the department operates in the community. 

2. The sheriff stressed repeatedly that he and his officers will only detain those involved in criminal activity and have no plans to actively seek out anyone based on their immigration status. 

3. Fayette County officers are expected to have their identification visible and will not wear face covering. 

4. Korenek stated his department and officers will be “reactive, not proactive”.

5. All officers in the sheriff’s department have been trained through the online training provided. The department received $7,500 for each officer who completed the training. They are trained but not deputized as ICE officers. The training dealt primarily with completing paperwork. There was no civil rights element to the training. He stated civil rights training is routinely covered within the department. 

6. Korenek stated his officers will treat the immigrant community just like they treat everyone else. They will interact only in the investigation of a crime and will not remove anyone without a signed judicial warrant. 

7. He stated they have not been given quotas, and he does not feel they are under any pressure. Nor does he expect much, if any, ICE presence here. 

8. The only incentive provided is an opportunity for limited overtime but not many are expected to put in for it, if any.

9. Korenek stated officers are trained to diffuse situations, and, in the event of an escalation, he expects them to do this. He further stated the expectation for his officers is to be professional regardless of the situation or whatever else may be happening. 

10. In response to concerns about actions by local officers in a neighboring county, he stated his officers would not be targeting the immigrant community and again stressed his department is concerned with criminal activity that threatens the safety of the community, not immigration status. 

This is a very brief overview. In general, those attending the meeting were pleased with Sheriff Korenek’s responses and openness.

"No Kings Day" Rally

     On March 28, 2026, a National “No King’s Day” rally took place in our Nation and even in Europe.
     Fayette County Democrats gathered for the rally on the square in La Grange from 9:00 to 10:30. About 94 folks came to rally with us. There were friends from Bastrop, Weimar, Flatonia and Michigan. I was standing near a man I didn’t recognize and asked where he was from. He was just passing through our town along the highway from Michigan after visiting in Houston. He stopped when he saw our rally and joined us. He said he would continue down the highway and stop in towns that were rallying.  We always bring extra signs for folks who don’t have them. He liked his sign so much he took it with him with our permission.
     At 10:30, we met under the Oak trees near the Court House for a sing-a-long.  Our talented guitarists, Annette Holdeman, Jaci Elliott, and John Williford played protest songs for us to sing. We sang a special song that Jaci wrote called “Let’s Rise”.  We also sang “Those Two are on Our Minds”, a tribute in memory of the two American citizens murdered by ICE, Renee Good and Alex Pretti.  The melody was originally written by Pete Seeger for a song titled “Those Three are on my Mind”, a song about three civil rights activists murdered in Mississippi in 1964, and Jaci rewrote lyrics to honor Good and Pretti.
     I know I felt a sense of renewal and patriotism that I hope was shared by the community of folks who rallied.

Close the Concentration Camps

     From children protesting inside the Dilley, Texas, concentration camp to clergy demonstrating in Minneapolis, the Brave of US are marching, striking, and speaking out to demand we close the camps, free those held, and bring them home.
     It’s time to free our cities from masked militia, rescue our friends and loved ones from ICE abduction and concentration camps, and liberate America from this cowardly regime of bullies for the billionaires.
     This cowardly regime and its masked militia are attacking and kidnapping families based on their appearance and origin, sending everyone from babies to grandparents into concentration camps. It’s time to shut down the camps and bring back home those who have gone to great lengths to build a better life. 
     The Brave of US are joining together across races, places, and parties to demand our leaders close the regime’s concentration camps, free our immigrant neighbors and loved ones, and bring them home.
